Here's a few pictures i took of a turkey vulture near my house yesterday. The bird would be pretty nice looking if it's head wasn't so little and ugly.

The clouds where pretty just before sunset. They had a pretty unique pattern as they where heading East towards the ocean. It looks like two cloud levels where meeting. The first picture is facing West as the clouds where approaching.

How To Make T Yarn From Old T Shirts

Let's face it, yarn is getting expensive. I wanted to find a way to save money and I even managed to accomplish some recycling.I have made some great items like totes and rugs from old cotton t shirts that i purchased from my local thrift store.(sales proceeds go to area food banks-another plus) Here I will explain how you can make T Yarn . Be warned, i got a nasty blister on my thumb when i first started this. You need a good sharp pair of scissors!

How to make t yarn

The best t shirts i find to use are cotton ones with no side seams and no transfers. You start by cutting the t shirt in half just below the arms.Now starting at the cut part of the bottom half of the t shirt, start cutting. I use my thumb nail as a width guide as i cut. Work in a spiral until you get to the hem at the end of the shirt. End cut, leave the seam aside.
Now if you don't have a blister from all that cutting, take the end of your cut strip you just made and pull it a little with both hands to stretch it out. working your way to the end. You will see it curl up on itself ( your t yarn is born) Repeat this process a billion times more (give or take) for your desired project.

This is a close up of one of the rugs i made with t shirt yarn. I found that a size N hook worked the best. I also work over the ends instead of sewing together and it comes out fine. I use single crochet stitches. After i finish my rug i take it out on my deck and hose it off. This helps get rid of any loose fibers and shapes it nicely. I then hang it over my railing to dry.

I liked these slippers so much, I also made a pair for myself the same night!
I crocheted these using two strands of worsted weight yarn in pale rose and an off white. The cuff can be worn up or folded down. So warm and toasty.I put mine on last night and was very happy with how quickly they warmed my feet and the way they felt. These are for a large size. I'm a size 9-10 and they fit me perfectly. You can even wear them with socks as the slipper does give a little.

As a crocheter, i find myself always looking for something new to work on. I rarely make toys, but when i came across Erin's Toy Store on Etsy, I couldn't wait to get started on one of her patterns. Erin has so many cute toy patterns to choose from. I figured i could get a jump start on birthday & Christmas gifts for next year. I started out with the Stewie and Bryan Griffin Crochet Patterns. I finished Bryan in two days The pattern was easy to follow and i am very pleased with the results. I got these for only fifty cents (one of her specials) There's many other characters to choose from with very affordable prices. I give Erin's Toy Store an A plus!

One thing i would recommend is to follow the pattern for the pupil the way it's written. I tried it my own way, and it came out a bit bigger. Still cute, but i should have followed the exact directions.
So anyway, here's how my Bryan turned out:

I was in "crocheters rut" and I wanted to try something new today. I bought some grommets, and was determined to use them. After much trial and error, I came up with a nice drawstring bag. I made it out of t shirt yarn. I used seven cotton t shirts to make it. I think i will make some more as Christmas gifts. I sort of kept notes, but basically I just wing it when i make things like this.

Actually, i haven't gotten nearly enough crocheting in as i would like to. I've been busy trying to get things in order to a wedding we're going to attend next month. I have been working on a couch throw that i'm doing in five different colors in single crochet and using a G hook! (why i do this to myself, i'll never know), but it is coming out very nice. I will have to take a picture of it later on.

I didn't realize that i had a bunch of comments just hanging in limbo-un moderated. I have it so comments have to be approved before they are published. Some have been coming through, but a lot didn't. One of these days, i really need to explore all the different features on here-lol

Well, we made it through the hurricane. Just a bit of rain squalls and some wind. Won't be able to relax until Nov. when the hurricane season is officially over.

I've been adding more hanging kitchen towels to my Etsy shop, as well as one very off the wall item. I have to admit , you need to have a bit of a twisted sense of humor, and may be totally grossed out by it. For that reason, i'm not going to post a picture of it here. Hurricane Irene Update

Starting to get a little windy 20-25 MPH right now. Expecting some rain squalls also with gust to 35-40. We got lucky with this one. The Carolinas aren't so lucky though, as it's supposed to hit them. The hurricane is about 200 miles off the coast from me now.

Well as i was worrying about weather or not the hurricane was going to hit, I decided to do some crocheting to try and keep my mind off it. So far i made a rug and some hanging kitchen towels. I bought a whole new batch of towels today, so i will be adding them as i get them done. I did manage to list one set of matching towels in my Etsy shop as well as the rug i made out of t shirts

The hurricane is growing up to a cat. 4 and will be about 200 or so miles east of the coast. We are going to get rain squalls and some gusty winds 35-40 mph starting tomorrow.(if all goes well) Long Island actually may get it there as a cat 1-2.

Hurricane Irene Going to be knocking on my door

I have gone from cautious to a bit nervous with the weather reports. I breathed a slight sigh of relief this morning when the projected track of hurricane Irene moved out a little further into the Atlantic. But now it's stronger. It will be off the coast of Florida start on 3:00 Thurs/Fri around 120-125 mph (cat 3) As it stands we may get tornadic activity with tropical storm force winds with squalls. (if it doesn't come closer)
So today we started cleaning up the loose stuff from the yard. Luckily the boys are here to help as hubby really can't do a lot with his COPD. We do have hurricane shutters on some of the windows, but will have to get the other ones covered up, at least the ones facing East. The boys (i still call them boys, they're grown now) have been such a big help. I have some big oak trees that concern me, but hubby isn't worried about them ( i think he's just trying to make me feel better) My youngest (20) is going out and buying some hurricane supplies tonight. We have a generator from the last storms, so they get that out and get it ready. Still a lot to do. I'm hoping my survey monies come through and some sales from my sites so i can chip in and not have the boys buy everything.
I haven't seen anyone really doing anything to prepare yet around my neighborhood. I figure i will probably see them out in their yards tomorrow.

It's The Most Wonderful Time Of Year.....NOT!

Well it's to be expected living in Florida, but i'm still not looking forward to the weather forecast. It looks like a hurricane is heading our way.They can change track, but as of right now they predict it hitting south Florida as a Cat. 1 at 85 mph, or just off the east coast and by the time it gets to my parts by Thursday-Friday, the winds will be around 60 mph., maybe a little stronger. Oh what fun!! Hurricanes also bring tornadoes. I went through bigger ones,(Francis & Jeanne Cats 2 & 3) so to me this will be a messy storm.

This rug took me a week ( I think that's a record for me) It's a custom order and measures 44 inches across. The pictures not the greatest since it's 12:30 am and I usually take my pictures outside in the natural light. This gives you an idea anyway. The colors she chose are Dark Red, Gold, Orange, Burgandy, Turquoise and Purple.

Well we lucked out. Just a day away from a forecasted tropical storm, it broke up. I really was not looking forward to rain squalls and wind. It did give me a chance to get slightly ready for a hurricane though.
I did take a couple of pictures this morning of the launch of the Juno spacecraft mounted on top of an Atlas V rocket. It's going to Jupiter.

Sorry i haven't blogged in a while. I've been busy crocheting a couple of custom orders I got on the same day! I also have been watching the weather reports on T.S. Emily. It's less than 1000 miles from me here in Florida. They can't say 100% what it will do yet since we are in the 'cone of uncertainty" The last report i saw said it should brush the east coastline and be off shore, but we are in the cross hairs of a direct hit. It's still to soon to tell. It may even grow to a hurricane. I haven't prepared anything differently yet. I went through Francis & Jeanne, cats 2 & 3. I figure this will be a "little windy" compared to those. But I will keep watching so i know if i need to put my potted plants away and such.

You hear these birds before you see them. They are called Quaker Parrots. They are very vocal. It's been said they escaped from a zoo years ago when there was a hurricane, and have since managed to thrive out in the wild.(I don't know if this is fact or not) Anyway, I was able to get some pictures of them.

I decided to do some yard work yesterday by weeding out the very overgrown areas under my shrubs/flowers. I know the "George" the black racer lives around the area somewhere, as he (just say it's a he) has let his presence know to me a number of times by slithering around the front yard. I kept this in the back of my mind as i started to pull some weeds. It was getting too much for my hands and back to handle, to i grabbed the garden hoe. Well now I'm making some progress. As i chopped the hoe into the dirt to cut away some weeds, a strange thing caught the corner of my eye. It was wiggling and hopping around like crazy.I cursed and jumped back thinking it was George. Looking a bit closer, i saw that it was about a five inch piece of his tail. As much as i don't like snakes, I couldn't just chop them up (unless they're poisonous) I hope it can grow a new tail, do they? So now I'll have to keep a look out for old stubby.

My Recycled Crochet Project: Bottle Cap Flower Pincushion Crochet Pattern

I designed this cute little flower pincushion using a plastic bottle cap (from vodka or any similar size of approx 1 1/4 inches wide by 1 inch high.) You can use any size you wish,(you just need to adjust the rounds to accommodate) but i'll use this for the example. I stuffed the cap with fiberfill and crocheted the flower around it. I use one right by the computer for easy access when I'm reading patterns off the computer and need my needles.
This is also a great way to use up little yarn scraps!
So here's what you'll need to make it
a plastic bottle cap (any size you want)
a small amount of fiberfill or leftover scarp yarn
a small amount of yarn (your choice of colors, textures)
size F crochet hook

Pattern
Flower Base (color A)
Make a magic loop (really easy to do, just check you tube video for instructions)
Row 1) Make 8 scs in loop, tighten. Join with sl st to first sc.
Row 2) Ch 1, sc in same as joining and 2 scs in each sc around , join with sl st to first sc. (16 scs) Now your circle should be just about the same size as the bottom of your bottlecap

Row 3-? ) ch 1, make 1 sc in each sc around (join) 16 scs. Keep doing this until you can cover the bottle cap
Now put the stem you just made over the bottle cap . It will be snug, but that's what you want. Finish, tuck end in cap (no need to hide, pretty cool!)

Middle of flower. With color B, repeat rows 1 thru 2. Finish

Base of Petals. Place your middle flower part over petal and start joining with color C to the stem with a sc around working through the sc of the top and stem work from top down (it's a little tricky) Do this for about 12 scs, leave a little opening to put the stuffing in .Add stuffing through opening and complete closing up-join

Ch 2. Make 2 dcs in same place as joining, * skip 1 sc, sc in next sc, ch 2, 2 dc in same place as sc you just made, repeat from * around. join to base of first petal, weave in end with embroidery needle.

Here in Florida, the temps are really starting to climb. Besides that, we're in a drought and they said on the new yesterday that there are 310 active brush fires. We did get a brief nasty storm last night that lasted about 20 minutes.

I was watching the big white birds (I think they're called Ibis) poking my neighbors lawn when one of them dug up what appears to be a black racer snake.I didn't know they ate snakes. Sucked it up like spaghetti.

I received a custom request last night for a hair snood. What is a hair snood you ask? Well they where more popular during the Renaissance era, but are making a comeback . They are also known as Tams. They are pretty as well as functional. The open work crochet allows it to be cool, yet provides a way to keep your hair in place. She will be wearing one to her sons wedding that is having a Renaissance theme.

I had these tucked away for years since they did not fit a bed size i had, I decided to turn them into a rug. I'm very happy the way it came out.
All fabric was washed before use.

Well since I gave you a snake yesterday, here's a spider. It's called a Southern House Spider. Non poisonous, but a bite from it would not be fun.
This one has been harassing me, picking on me and even flipped me off tonight...well maybe not, but it's been giving me the slip just to show up again. It's about 2-3 inches long? I took this picture as i was on my computer and it stopped by right in front of me on the wall about one foot away.. Too close for me! It even looks like it's got a big grin on it's face!
I don't like to squash anything that could possibly squash back, so i had to look for some spay. Great it's upstairs..empty! Maybe some Windex will work. So I made up my "bug spray" that i had to mix in a Fabreeze bottle. I head back downstairs, and it's gone! Where, I don't know.So i hang out upstairs for a while and then i start back downstairs and that sucker climbed across the ceiling and was all crouched up in the doorway. I think it spotted me as it tried to flatten it's body far up in the corner like some kind of Ninja. I got you now. I go to bast it forgetting i used a friggen Fabreeze bottle so it just gave a mist. It thanked me for the refreshing shower, and it took off again saying "I'll be back!" I think it may have mooned me.

I just finished up a custom rag rug order for one of my returning customers. This was a fun colored rug that actually reminded me of the colors of Easter. They where colors of a new shower curtain she bought, and wanted me to make a rug to match.
Here's what I came up with. It measures 28 inches across.It's made with t shirts and other fabrics that i bought at my local thrift store. Proceeds of the sales go to the area food banks.

I haven't blogged in a while. we have had our 10 yr old nephew visiting for a few weeks.
We took him to the Kennedy space center a few days ago. Here's some of the pictures.Too bad he won't be here to see the launch on Friday of Shuttle Endeavor . I won't be going back there to see it myself as they predict the traffic is going to be a nightmare, especially since the president will be there to see it as well. I can see it from my house anyway so i hope to get some pictures as long as it isn't cloudy.

Super Moon

The super moon event is said to occur between March 16 and March 22 with the full moon being closest to Earth than any time in the past 18 year. This was the picture I took last night as I saw it through the tree top. It's better in person. Not very impressive in the picture.
